Jointly sponsored by NCC and Nagoya University, the Project of Research on Atmosphere and Rainfall of Low Layer in Huaihe River Basin started in October 2001, and proceeded smoothly at present. The China-Japan Cooperation project includes field observation experiment and research, plans to develop long-range observation on atmospheric boundary layer flux, wind profile, Doppler radar and microwave section radiation during 2003 to 2005 in semi-wet and semi-arid region in Huaihe River Basin of China and the region near the Gonggu Island of Japan. The contribution of the change of flux parameters in atmospheric boundary layer to the Meiyu front heavy rainfall would be established through the observation and analysis research on temperature, humidity, flux, radiation and water vapor flux of boundary layer and between land-air. At the same time, using the large-scale background data and the TRMM satellite data, the project improved the boundary layer parameter in numerical models and the skill on rainfall forecast in Meiyu period based on the analysis on the character of space-time scale distribution of rainfall, and analysed the change of different type of vegetation and its impact on rainfall distribution and water resources.
At the end of 2002, the project was ranked as key project of basic research by MOST of China. It was also ranked as key project of basic research by MOST of Japan in 2002. In January 2003, the agreement of cooperation on the project was signed by CMA and Nagoya University.
LAPS implemented observational experiment in 2003 and started the one-month intensive observational period (IOP) from July 2004. During the IOP, except the routine land surface observation, more observations were carried out by using boundary layer steel tower (30 m), Doppler wind profiler, Doppler sound radar and AMSs. In addition, manual paddy field observation were implemented around the field site, including land surface long wave radiation, soil humidity, ground temperature, soil moisture, soil evaporation, CO2, crops growing and cloud conditions. In addition, the wind profiler will operate the temperature and humidity observation during the rainfall process.
Associated with the low layer atmospheric observation, the sounding observation in Fuyang has been intensified from twice a day to four times a day during the IOP. The Doppler radar data collection in Hefei has also been intensified from May to August. The Anhui Provincial Meteorological Bureau had ever attended the intensive sounding observation and weather radar observation during HUBEX-GAME, thus full of experiences.
The implementation of the project was greatly supported by DOT, DFSDM, DSTD, DIC, Anhui PMB and MOST.
